CHARACTER NAME: Montgomery “Scotty” Scott (Please note this links to his wiki)
SERIES: Star Trek: AOS
CANON POINT: Just after the tribble comes back to life, but before Spock heads after Khan.
AGE: 36
APPEARANCE: Appearance here
PREVIOUS GAME HISTORY: This is Scotty’s first game.

PERSONALITY:

After meeting him, James Kirk had this to say:
“Montgomery Scott, is an experienced Starfleet engineer of unexpected mental and technical gifts, if possibly dubious character,"
Something he would no doubt continue to say about his character, perhaps adding to it “With unwavering loyalty.”

Scotty would eagerly describe himself as a genius, and in all honesty it isn’t much of a boast so much as a fact. He has a keen eye for technology, physics (In all forms), engineering, and generalised sciences. And with a quick and even mind he is more than capable of giving the best and worst scenarios that could come of what was being discussed, taking seconds to figure out what would take others ten to fifteen minutes to realise on their own.

Due to this, Scotty has developed enough of an ego to cause him to brag about not only his abilities, but how intelligent, brilliant and helpful to those that would be/are involved. However he is not smug or over bearing about his intelligence and what he can do. What it does however is manifest into a strong sense of self confidence. This is shown during his first meeting with James Kirk, where he openly tells both Kirk and Original Universe Spock (Spock Prime) that an outcome of an argument with his relativistic physics professor in Starfleet Academy resulted in one of Admiral Archer’s prized beagles was lost due to his trying to beam it from earth to another planet. In order to prove that not only was it easy to transport something the size of a grape fruit to another planet, that it could be in fact down with a live creature. While Scotty does feel bad about the beagle, he still remains steadfast over the fact that given more time he could have perfected the maths behind it. As such he considers his posting to Delta Vega as punishment for what he had done.

A product of Scotty’s confidence and intelligence is his ability to out stubborn a mule when he truly believes in something; Most evidently shown with the incident involving Admiral Archer’s Beagle in the first movie, and again in the second movie; Into Darkness, where due to Scotty being kept in the dark due to the contents of the new model photon torpedos as it was classified, did not feel comfortable having the 74 weapons on the ship, especially so close to the warp core, because he would have no idea how whatever was inside them could interact with the very volatile and very radioactive warp core. He refused to sign for the ordinance, and when trying to Persuade Kirk into not having them on board, let alone entertaining the idea of firing them was clearly falling on deaf ears, he resigned his position with his second in command, Keenser in toe. When Scotty is sure that he is in the right, he will strongly back that right even if it means leaving a position that he truly loves.

Next to his genius, Scotty’s biggest asset is his incredible loyalty to those around him. Especially towards Captain Kirk. This was first shown in the first movie, he is shown by Spock Prime the calculations for transwarp beaming that Spock Prime told him that his Scotty had already realised it, and then uses that calculation to get back aboard the Enterprise with Kirk from Delta Vega. Once aboard the Enterprise, Kirk helps get him free of some of the equipment that Scotty accidentally landed in. When it was demanded of him to explain how they got aboard of the ship, Scotty refuses to answer the question, simply because Kirk told him not to. From then on it is proven time and time again and it all boils down to one thing.

Trust. From the moment Kirk gives Scotty the position of chief engineer, Kirk not only gives Scotty free reign over the entire engineering section of the Enterprise, he also trusts that Scotty will do his best in the role, due to this Scotty returns this trust in spades, and as long as it doesn’t conflict with his morals and standards, Scotty will obey with little to no second thought on the issue. After resigning his post in the second movie, Scotty gets a call from Kirk while he is out drinking heavily and complaining about the fact he had to quit. Kirk asks him to check out a set of coordinates given to him. Even though he initially refuses, he seemingly wastes no time in leaving the bar and heading straight to the destination. All because Kirk apologises for not listening to him in the first place.
This trust and loyalty is so strong, that Scotty eagerly puts himself in danger by stowing away on the ship that was at the location, but forcibly restarts that ships systems to keep the Enterprise from being destroyed as well as causing a man to die so his captain can get aboard the ship he stowed away from by opening an airlock door, sucking the man out while Kirk gets sucked in.

Loyalty and trust are easily broken, Starfleet broke these to Scotty by confiscating his Transwarp equation only to find out that it had fallen into the hands of a man who killed indiscriminately. Yet, when Scotty went through the ruins on the small jump ship that had fired on Starfleet’s emergency meeting room, he discovers that it held a transwarp device and that it had taken the occupant to Kronos. Instead of going to Starfleet Command about this, he instead went to Kirk and Spock, knowing that they would do something about it, and better than Command could.

While he is very eager to show what he is made of, Scotty would never consider himself a leader, he knows that his quick thinking and intelligence are much better used as a support to a leader and the whole team. When it was evident that the Warp core was out of alignment, when discussing it with Jim about it needing to be realigned, he never used the words “I” or “you” but instead frequently made inclusive statements like “We”, as such, Scotty is a strong team player, preferring to be part of the whole picture rather than the primary focus.
Throughout the movies, it is shown that Scotty develops a rather strong possessive streak when it comes to the Enterprise, he is one of only to people who refer to the Enterprise not only with feminine pronouns and refer to her as “His ship”. The only other person to do this is her Captain.

As such Scotty is exceedingly proud of her and does his upmost to upgrade her in every way possible, even developing new ways to do things in order to get that little bit of extra output from her. Which is why his resigning his position to Kirk in the second movie shows to be such an important moment to Scotty. He has such a strong love for this ship that he cannot bring himself to be aboard her to see her potentially destroyed by dangerous ordinances. The ship holds what has become his family and he isn’t able to fathom what it could be like to willingly put them in danger. His love for the crew is shown with barely held restraint when he tries to tell Spock about the condition of Kirk, telling him to come to engineering. When telling him that they cannot get him out due to the radiation levels it is obvious he is trying his hardest not to let himself succumb to the tears welling up, tears which begin to overtake him as Uhura makes it to the scene.

Something to note about Scotty is that even under pressure, Scotty can either show a certain over dramatic calm, or a quite dry thought process. He is often exclaiming what could go wrong with the situation while the whole time trying to fix or enhance what he is working with. When presented with a situation that people should be surprised with he instead tends to take on more of a “Oh, so that’s how you see it, huh?” manner, not exactly making a joke of the situation, but his inflection tends to lean more towards playful.

Scotty in general is a very excitable and jovial man, he is more than happy to talk as plainly to others as he can. He spends most of his time talking to everyone on the crew as if they are indeed family, whether it is the captain or one of the engineers under him he will talk to them all the same, and has no problem telling everyone around him when he believes a situation to be stupid or dangerous. While he has developed a strong bond with many of the crew members, few will have the level of friendship that he has with Keenser.
Keenser has been with Scotty since he was stationed on Delta Vega if not longer, as he treats Keenser with a level of familiarity that not even Kirk has achieved. He almost seems somewhere between a best friend and a sidekick, it is very uncommon for them to be far from each other unless it is something too dangerous for the small Keenser to be a part of.

Being a part of the enterprise has given Scotty a level of excitement, wonder, and joy he has obviously longed for in life, especially when it comes to developing new things for the Enterprise and her crew. This has clearly only strengthened his loyalty to her and her crew. While he is an engineering mastermind, he is however terrible at fighting, this isn’t to say he won’t do his best, but it is obvious that it is an area he seriously under skilled in. This skill isn’t really something he’s interested in developing.

ABILITIES:
Gifted Engineer: Scotty is recalled as one of the best engineers the academy produced, there’s very little in terms of technology that he can’t handle. At least when it comes to technology from his era, technology from the 1920’s will be more than a little foreign to him. But it won’t discourage him form figuring it all out quickly.

Mathematician: Part of being such a fantastic engineer is that maths comes to Scotty, like breathing.

Suspension of Disbelief: Due to Scotty’s rather easy going nature, he shows little concern when people tell him something which training and common sense tend to tell him cannot happen. This was seen when Original Universe Spock informs him that he is from an alternate future from the one their currently in. Other than informing Spock that he didn’t believe him. He wasn’t overly dramatic, although it was a tad wordy, it was simply “If I were to believe you, which I don’t by the way…”. This would explain how he finds relativistic physics such a simple discipline.

Steadfast dedication : When in the process of carrying out something, very little can put Scotty off his task. Whether it’s fixing or upgrading the nacelles’ of the enterprise, or sneaking onto another ship and then opening up a small exterior air lock to let his Captain and another in while being intimidated by hired security. There is so very little that will put Scotty off when he is truly set on doing something.

Excitable curiosity : If there is one thing that can make Scotty involved in something it’s to get him curious into whatever that is. It was Spock letting him in on an equation that Scotty had developed in Spocks original universe, and the chance to get inside of the enterprise that caused Scotty to join Kirk. It was also Kirk supplying Scotty with mysterious co-ordinates that got him eager to explore what could be out there. This is one of the major factors in what makes Scotty such an amazing engineer, which is his endless curiosity and want to improve what he has.

JOURNAL ENTRY SAMPLE:

THIRD-PERSON SAMPLE:

Scotty couldn’t believe it, after everything they had been through together. Okay so maybe not ‘together’ because the Captain’s place is on the bridge or off on missions and his job was to stay in the engine room and make sure everything worked. But Scotty did more than just an amazing job at that, if he says so himself.

“After all, I managed to keep her leak free after being at the bottom of a planets ocean, and she’s no actually equipped to deal with that! Even you know that!”
Keenser didn’t reply, as he watched the pacing as Scotty was getting ready for them to go out and drink. Really he didn’t need to reply, this was the second time he brought it up since they quit. Not that Scotty would have listened to him anyway like this.

“Does he think it’s easy? Dinnae answer that, of course he does, everythin’ comes easy tae him. Him and his square jaw and easy smile ‘ahis. Well I dinnae have to put up with him and his perfect looks and devil may-care attitude any more. I can always get assigned tae new ship. One we’re I’ll be appreciated and respected as the genius I am. Just you watch, he’ll be calling me up just you watch.”

He pulls on a shirt and buttons it up.

“Yes siree. Because something won’t be just right, or he’ll push the engines too far and there won’t be anyone around skilled enough to know how to make her hum like I do. That’ll show him.”

He stops a moment and looks out the window that shows a clear and star filled sky, knowing that the Enterprise is out there without him. He feels a lump in his throat, because while he can be an engineer anywhere, and find things to do in between times. He’s never had more fun or more challenges to overcome than when he was on her decks, tuning her to run perfectly. He really hadn’t wanted to leave her and he really hopes Kirk does listen to him and not use those torpedoes. But really there was no other option when he knew something was wrong and that his captain, the man who pulled him out of Delta Vega and gave him a place on his ship, wouldn’t listen to his warnings.

He stands there a moment longer looking out the window, then blinks as he turns to look at Keenser.

“Whit’er yea doin’ just sittin’ there? Let’s go.”
